Acute Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
Acute conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is inflammation of the thin, clear tissue (conjunctiva) that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. It’s a common condition that can be caused by infection, allergies, or irritation.
Causes:
1. Viral (most common)
- Often associated with a cold or respiratory infection
- Highly contagious
2. Bacterial
- Caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus or Streptococcus
- Also contagious
3. Allergic
- Triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander
- Not contagious
4. Irritant-related
- Due to smoke, chlorine, or foreign substances
Symptoms:
- Red or pink discoloration of the white of the eye
- Watery or thick discharge (clear, yellow, or green)
- Itching or burning sensation
- Crusting of the eyelids, especially in the morning
- Swelling or gritty feeling in the eye
- One or both eyes can be affected
Diagnosis:
- Based on symptoms and eye examination by a healthcare provider
Management:
1. Viral Conjunctivitis
- Usually clears on its own in 1–2 weeks
- Use cold compresses and artificial tears for comfort
- Practice good hygiene to avoid spreading it
2. Bacterial Conjunctivitis
- May improve on its own, but antibiotic eye drops or ointment can speed recovery
- Symptoms typically improve in a few days with treatment
3. Allergic Conjunctivitis
- Treated with antihistamine or anti-inflammatory eye drops
- Avoid known allergens when possible
Prevention Tips:
- Wash hands frequently
- Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
- Do not share towels, pillows, or eye makeup
- Replace contact lenses as advised and maintain proper lens hygiene
